Newsletter 5: Zukunft Community
Dear quint-essenz user

For two years the "Community" exchange platform on quint-essenz has enabled users to present themselves and their own projects and organizations to other professionals in health promotion and prevention and to exchange ideas virtually in groups of professionals. How is the Community doing now? This newsletter will focus mainly on (virtual) networking. We hope you enjoy reading it. See you soon on the platform!

Future Community
The added value of virtual networking

The quint-essenz quality system can be used in health promotion and prevention as a reference work, a project management tool, a toolbox and an exchange platform. The Community platform has been part of the online service of quint-essenz for just over two years. Professionals and organizations can make their profiles publicly visible, publish their projects and exchange ideas on various matters with other professionals and organizations in special interest groups. What is the potential of Community, and how is it doing at the moment?

Quality system

At the end of February we carried out the changeover to the new tripartite phase model, which led to adaptations to the content in the list of criteria, as well as in the topic texts and tools.

In connection with the publication of the book "Gesundheitsförderung mit System" we have made a few changes in terminology. The greatest content change concerns the notion of strategy. We no longer use it for the procedural stages for achieving the individual project objectives, but for the higher-level correlations of cause and effect of the planned intervention. Thus these correlations are no longer of secondary importance compared to objectives, but are now of primary importance.

Because of these adaptations to the content there are new versions of the following tools: project draft, project plan, final report and planning chart.

My Domain

Documents and links can now be categorized within projects, organizations and groups of professionals as well as in the individual profile. Categories function in the same way as tags. The main difference is that they are not assigned to an individual user, but to the joint project, organization or group of professionals. Categories are used in List View for filtering the entries. Categories can be declared "public" so that they can be used for grouping documents and links in the public profile in the Community.

Within groups of professionals until recently it was only possible to hold discussions, while the keeping of a journal and the administration of tasks were only possible in projects. We have made an adjustment here. Discussions, journals and tasks are now available in projects, organizations and groups of professionals.  The latest entries are shown on the personal home page irrespective of their origin.

Discussion threads and bilateral messages can now be modified or deleted by the author. Deleted threads remain in the list but instead of the content the date of deletion is shown. Moderators and administrators are able to delete individual discussion threads if necessary.

In the case of discussion threads and bilateral messages, it is now possible for several documents and/or links to be attached at the same time. The attachments appear automatically on the corresponding lists within the project, organization or group of professionals, and can be managed there by the moderators and administrators.

Tools: Structured organization chart

One of the main tools of the quint-essenz quality system is the structured organization chart. The structured organization chart can be used to clarify the project structure. It indicates who is or will be involved in the project, in which role, and how the project is to be institutionally embedded and networked. In this way it is possible to see which persons and organizations might have a positive or negative influence on the project's success or failure, which specialist, financial and political support facilities are available and where conflicts might arise.

Book Review

Earl, Sarah; Carden, Fred & Smutylo, Terry (2001): Outcome mapping: Building learning and reflection into development programs. Ottawa: International Development Research Centre.

This book focuses primarily on an approach to planning that is heavily community-oriented. Stakeholders define the desired effects of a program jointly in a clearly structured and guided process. The result is what stakeholders “expect to see”, “like to see” and “love to see”. Secondly, this approach also has an active online community in which professionals from all over the world exchange their experiences of using the approach.
